How to Prepare Job Safety Analysis (JSA): Mastering JSA
Job Safety Analysis (JSA) preparation is a interesting and
an important role of a safety officer, although JSA is prepared by a group of
team members, but it is incomplete without participation of a safety officer.
In this article we will know complete information about preparing
JSA, from writing to approval, we will learn how to select a team, how to
gather information for JSA, how to write in an appropriate format and how to
get client approval successfully.
Job Safety Analysis Definition:
In simple Job Safety Analysis is a process or technique to
identify hazards in a specific task by breaking the job into steps and identifying
practicable and applicable control measures.
To Prepare
the JSA we need to know the steps of JSA first:
Steps of Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
Generally, JSA can be completed in four steps:
- First step of JSA – Select the job for which JSA to be done.
- Second step of JSA – Break the selected job into its steps.
- Third step of JSA – Now identify the possible hazards in all steps.
- Forth step of JSA – Identify control measures for each hazard.
In short – Select the job, break the job, identify hazards, determine control measure.
Job Safety Analysis Preparation:
Now by following these steps we will prepare a JSA, apart
from the four steps of JSA for our convenience we will add more steps, but the
basics of preparation will be around the main four steps.
1.
1. Job Selection:
Select a job from your worksite for which you want to
prepare a job safety analysis, for e.g. work at height, excavation, scaffolding
etc.
2.
2. JSA Team Selection:
JSA is not an individual responsibility, a proper JSA can be
done by a experienced and competent team.
JSA Team Members
- Safety officer (Lead the process and team).
- Engineer/Supervisor/Forman (The members who know the process and steps of job).
- Experienced workmen/Technician (Workers are the closer to work who experienced the risk and problems on daily basis, they can help you in identifying the hazards).
- HSE Representative – (A member of EHS team who have knowledge of legal safety requirements as per organization, national & international standards).

3. Break the job in steps/sequences:
As to identify breaking the job is the part of JSA, suppose
you have to carry out JSA for scaffolding erection so to erect scaffold first
you will mobilize man and material, there will be manual handling and then erection
of scaffold, so each step to be take in care.
4.
4. Hazard Identification:
Now identify hazards in each step you can discuss with the
team and also can read documents like previous JSA, Risk Assessment, MSDS,
Safety manual, Near miss/Incident report etc.
5.
5. Control Measures:
Once you identified the hazards now determine the suitable
control measures, you should follow the hierarchy of hazard control, you can
also get references from OSHA, NFPA, Factory Act for standard control measures.
6.
6. Documenting the JSA:
After all the above steps have been completed you need to
record your findings in a document called JSA format, here we have created a
example of JSA format for your reference.

7. 7. Review, Approval & Implementation of JSA:
After completion of the JSA format call for a JSA review meeting
with your team and the client representatives, review from your side and hand
over to client for review once they satisfy the JSA they will approve, share
all the information in job safety analysis with the working crew in TBT or any
specific safety training, then implement the JSA at worksite.
Conclusion:
Preparing a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a crucial process
in ensuring workplace safety. By systematically identifying hazards and
implementing control measures, JSA helps in minimizing risks and preventing
accidents. A well-prepared JSA requires teamwork, collaboration, and adherence
to safety regulations. From selecting the job to obtaining client approval and
implementing the safety measures on-site, every step plays a vital role in
making the workplace safer. By following a structured approach and continuously
reviewing the JSA, organizations can create a safer work environment and
promote a strong safety culture.
