    What is Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

    A Safety data sheet (SDS) former known as MSDS is a document which provides complete information about the chemical or products, such as physical and chemical properties, hazards associated with product and method of safely handling and storage.

    OSHA Standard for SDS

    Hazard communication standard (HCS) 29 CFR 1910.1200(g).

    Note:- Information provided in this article about safety data sheet is driven from OSHA standard as mentioned above.
    Sections of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) as per OSHA.

    As per OSHA (HCS) 29 CFR 1910.1200(g), Safety Data Sheet compromises of 16 Section.


    Sections of Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

    SDS - Section 1st.

    IDENTIFICATION.
    This section contains following information about Product:-

    • Product name or synonyms.
    • Manufacturer or supplier Name, address, phone number and emergency contact number.
    • Use of the chemical or product.

    SDS - Section 2nd.

    HAZARD IDENTIFICATION.
    In section 2nd of safety data sheet contains following information about Product:-

    • Hazard classification of the product or chemical (such as flammable liquid or other category).
    • Signal word for warning (such as Danger signage or warning signage).
    • Hazard statement about Product (such as causes serious eye damage).
    • Pictograms and hazard symbols (such as skull, crossbones, flame).
    • What safety precautions to be taken.
    • Description of any hazards related to product not otherwise classified.

    SDS Section 3rd.

    COMPOSITION or INFORMATION OF INGREDIENTS.
    This section contains following information:-

    • Ingredients name use to manufacturer the products.
    • Common name & synonyms of composition.
    • Unique identifiers to identify the composition.

    SDS Section 4rth.

    FIRST AID MEASURES.
    Safety Data Sheet contains following information in this section:-

    • Necessary first aid instructions by relevant route of exposure (such as inhalation, skin & eye contact, ingestion).
    • Information about the symptoms or effects of product on exposure.
    • Information for immediate medical assistance & special treatment needed, when necessary.

    SDS Section 5th.

    FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES.
    Following information mentioned in this section of SDS:-
    • Suitable extinguishing equipment and media for Fire.
    • Information and advice on specific hazards that may develop from the product in case of fire.
    • Appreciate PPE's for fire fighting.

    SDS Section 6th.

    ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES.
    Following information mentioned in this section of SDS:-

    • Use of personal protection in case of accidental release of product or chemical such as removal of ignition source, proper ventilation and use of personal protection equipment.
    • Process of cleaning, (e.g., appropriate techniques for neutralization, decontamination, cleaning
    • or vacuuming; adsorbent materials; and/or equipment required for containment/clean up).

    SDS Section 7th.

    HANDLING & STORAGE.
    Section 7 of safety data sheet contains following information:-

    • Information about precautions for safe handling, minimizing release of product or chemical in environment.
    • Information about storage such as requirement of ventilation.

    SDS Section 8th.

    EXPOSURE CONTROLS or PERSONAL PROTECTION.
    Following information mentioned in this section:-

    • Permissable Exposure Limit of chemical.
    • Threshold limit value of chemical.
    • Appreciate engineering control such as use of local ventilation.
    • Recommendation for appreciate PPE's such as eye, face, skin & respiratory protection.

    SDS Section 9th.

    PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL PROPERTIES.
    This section contains following information:-

    • Physical appearance.
    • Color.
    • Odor
    • pH value.
    • Melting point.
    • LEL & UEL.

    SDS Section 10th.

    STABILITY & REACTIVITY.
    This section of safety data sheet contains following information:-

    • Product or chemical is stable or reactive at normal room temperature.

    SDS Section 11th.

    TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION.
    This section of SDS contains following information:-

    • Likely route of exposure, (inhalation, ingestion, skin & eye contact).
    • Information about delayed, immediate & chronic effect from long & short term exposure.

    SDS Section 12th.

    ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION (non - mandatory).
    • This section is not mandatory to mention in SDS as per OSHA, generally this section contains information about environmental impact of the chemical.

    SDS Section 13th.

    DISPOSAL CONSTRUCTION (non - mandatory).
    • This section is also not mandatory to mention in safety data sheet, this section contains information about disposal containers to be use for disposal and appreciate disposal method.

    SDS Section 14th.

    TRANSPORT INFORMATION (non - mandatory).
    • This section is also not mandatory to mention in SDS, generally this section contains UN number and HAZCHEM code of the chemical.

    SDS Section 15th.

    REGULATORY INFORMATION (non - mandatory).
    • Section 15th is also not mandatory to mention in safety data sheet, generally this section contains information about the safety, health and environmental regulations specific for the product.

    SDS Section 16th.

    OTHER INFORMATION.
    This section of safety data sheet contains following information:-

    • When the SDS prepared.
    • Last revision.
    • And other information if required.
